Introducing Bae - the personal shopping chatbot from PayPal Australia

PayPal Australia has today launched Bae, a Facebook Messenger bot that helps Australian millennials discover quirky and bespoke online fashion retailers from all corners of the world.

The launch of Bae stemmed from the insight that Australian consumers are looking for more meaningful retail experiences from brands they know and love. Developed in collaboration with Isobar Australia, Bae uses interactive, humourous and emoji-laden questions to reveal a shopper’s personal sense of style, before connecting them with unique online retailers that suit their fashion-sense.

Whether asking about fashion inspiration – “You’re after a new look and need some reality TV inspo… The Bachelor or Survivor?” – or digging into what shoppers are most comfortable wearing – “Would you wear trackies errday [sic] OR only when nobody’s watching?” – Bae matches fashion-forward Aussies with a selection of hundreds of online retailers from Australia and all over the world, including Poland, Korea, Italy and beyond.

Elaine Herlihy, Marketing Director at PayPal Australia, said that Bae uses technology to create the personalisation that Australian shoppers are looking for.

“Innovating for the customer is about understanding their expectations and adding value. The millennial audience is an incredibly important generation. They are mobile-savvy, connected and looking to brands for a personal and convenient experience."

“The proliferation of artificial intelligence and machine learning presents an opportunity for Australian businesses to meaningfully connect with millennial shoppers. We are excited to launch Bae within Messenger as a means of introducing our consumers to retailers using PayPal who they may never have discovered,” Ms Herlihy said.

The digitally-led campaign will run from today until the start of October. The campaign will leverage social content, digital above-the-line, PR, media partnerships and influencer engagement.

“We have seen incredible success with millennial consumers who use PayPal more than any other generation in Australia. Following our recent ‘Avoid the Awkward’ peer-to-peer money sharing campaign, we have seen that Australian millennials are looking for new, exciting and technology-driven ways to engage with brands. Bae ticks all those boxes,” Ms Herlihy concluded.
