Challenge

Influencing governments across Asia

Taiwan Gay Sports and Taiwan Gay Development Movement Association hopes the same-sex marriage bill can also spread around the neighboring countries in Asia, so we needed a campaign idea that would encourage people to come together and support this message.

On May 17th, 2019, Taiwan became the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. Taiwan’s LGBTQ community celebrated, especially Mr. Chi Chia Wei, the first gay man to come out in Taiwan. This man has single handedly fought to legalize same sex marriage since 1986. As a recognition for his efforts, Taiwan’s president Tsai presented Mr. Chi with the pen she used to sign the Taiwan same sex marriage bill.

Solution

An invitation to the never before

Mr. Chi worked with Isobar to create a set of identical pens, called the ‘Pen of Equality’. Mr. Chi sent the Pens of Equality to the neighboring leaders of Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand, and invited their citizens to speak up.

The Facebook post about the campaign was shared over 10, 000 times with zero marketing budget and made mainstream news across Asia. It may have even played a role in encouraging the Thailand Government who announced that they will soon legalise gay marriage following the campaign.
