Open letter in support of marriage equality
We, Isobar Australia, write to express our support for marriage equality and strong opposition to the plebiscite for many reasons that fall within our very own values.
We believe everyone should feel welcome, included, equal and really everything that makes us human. This belief is at the heart of how we operate day-to-day and key to our values as an agency.
We recognise the right of our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) friends, colleagues, clients and partners to live and work free of prejudice and discrimination. This includes the clear right to marry the partner of their choice.
These types of decisions affect people in our team directly. It’s not hyperbole; people’s lives are massively impacted and it hurts.
72% of Australians support marriage equality
Australians are increasingly supportive of marriage equality, with a recent Crosby Textor survey showing 72 percent, believe same sex couples should be allowed to marry. We 100 percent agree.
A plebiscite will fuel a negative conversation
Facilitating a debate which gives a public platform to anti-equality campaigners may create an incredibly hostile environment for anyone who identifies as LGBTI.
We’re a progressive country in so many ways, yet so far behind
Globally, more than 20 countries have passed laws to allow same sex marriage, including countries that are culturally similar to ours like New Zealand, the United States of America, Canada, and Great Britain. These countries did so with lesser public support for marriage equality than Australia is seeing right now.
Equality and diversity makes us stronger
We strongly believe in equality amongst people from all walks of life – in employment, education, and community involvement. Equality improves workplaces, service delivery and society in general by allowing everyone to be treated with equal respect.
Equality in the workplace works; discrimination does not.
We support the right for all our employees to have equal opportunities in life and therefore support marriage equality.
